L-theanine: what is it?
L-theanine is an amino acid present in the root of the tea plant, it is then transported into the tea leaves where it concentrates. It is found in large quantities in green tea in particular. Discovered in 1949, it is especially recognized for its relaxing action on the body.
Benefits.
Numerous studies have been carried out on L-theanine and agree on its effect on:
- the stress
- attention and responsiveness
- quality of sleep
- immune system
L-theanine has several different actions on the body. First of all, it will help the brain to create alpha waves (these brain waves associated with relaxation practices such as meditation for example), to thus help us relax. It will also act on our reactions to stress by imitating an inhibitory neurotransmitter called GABA which blocks excitatory reactions in the brain: we therefore observe a reduction in anxiety and stress.
By influencing certain neurotransmitters, in particular by increasing dopamine and regulating serotonin, L-theanine will create a feeling of well-being. L-theanine will modulate our mood and optimize our learning and concentration abilities. Its calming effect also improves the quality of sleep.
Finally, its stimulating properties on the immune system have also been recognized.

Info or intox ?
Theine and L-theanine mean the same thing. Poison. L-Theanine is one of the main active ingredients in tea along with caffeine (theine) and catechins. Theine molecule is the same as that of caffeine, even if they do not act in quite the same way on the body, the stimulating effect being smoother over time for theine. Often confused with theine, L-theanine is the main amino acid present in tea leaves. |
